Four Seasons

Posting these at the special request of Yoav,

These are some quick little watercolors I did for an assignment; I had to "illustrate the four seasons in a place I call home" based on what I learned in my Chinese Art class. In Chinese art they use a lot of symbols (particular flowers, for instance) to indicate the seasons. So, rather than paint the weather, I decided to depict the seasons in the place I call home (Louisiana) using some 'symbols' I myself came up with.

So here you are, spring, summer, fall, and winter. Enjoy!

spring: flowers (crate myrtle, azaleas, irises), crawfish season

summer: blackberries, honeysuckle, shrimp, (and egrets and cypress because why not),

fall: migratory birds (Canadian geese!), acorns, alligator season

winter: cardinals, bare/brown trees, Mardi Gras

Yup, this is definitely one of the most bizarre things I've ever painted!

This was done for my "Western Music and Painting" class. The assignment was to create a design/image based on Schoenberg's Variations for Orchestra, Op. 31. See, Schoenberg invented this way of arranging music called the Serial system, where you basically pick a sequence of 12 non-repeating notes and then transmute them in various ways to create a composition.... which is rather interesting in theory, but the result (to my uncultured tastes, anyway) kind of sounds like rubbing your eardrums with a cheese grater.

Still, it was a good opportunity to try something different.

There was actually legitimate conceptual thought put into this piece, but I won't bore you with the details. Have a look and a listen (if you dare) and see what you can find. :)

This semester I have a Drawing for Animators course and I'm having tons of fun with it.

For this assignments, we created characters based on shapes we saw in silhouettes, scribbles, and miscellaneous textures.... and I also had to combine a kangaroo and a train. Challenging!

Louisiana Flowers

Hey there!

I did some watercolor paintings and it was requested that I post them here. Unfortunately, however, I forgot to scan them before they were sold. So all I have are these awful phone photos.

The commissioner requested different Louisiana plants... so I did the magnolia (the state flower), water lilies (because...we have swamps) and day lilies (pretty common around here), in that order. I used a type of paper I never had before, that allowed me to apply colors in layers... I had fun figuring it out as I went.

This is a watercolor painting I did recently. Flowers are fun to paint...

On that note, I now have an etsy shop. nothing fancy and still a bit under construction, but it has some of my paintings available to buy, and hopefully someday will branch out to include other crafts.

Ooookay! Hopefully I'll have more to share soon.... my art-making this summer has been rather erratic-- lots of traditional work, lots of practice, lots of rough sketches, lots of commissions....

I'm taking a representational painting class this semester, which is both super exciting and also slightly masochistic of me (we have to complete a still life every weekend, so on top of animating the homework's pretty intense)... but it's so fun to paint again! Especially since last semester I didn't really have any 'artsy' classes.

Hey guys!

So the semester's over. And wow, what a semester it's been.

I can't even think of anything to say about it, that's how mindblowing it was.

Here are a few animations from the end of the year

Firstly, the lip sync with that cat character I posted a while back. I animated this quite a few weeks ago, I just never got around to putting it here. The line comes for "A Bug's Life."

This is one of those animations where, looking back now, I feel like I could have made it so much better! If nothing else, it makes me excited to move on to the next semester, when I get to continue to explore in animation. YEAH!

Moving on,

Final project in Traditional Animation (ever! I'll miss you, TA :( <3 ) was the collaborative dance project. The whole class chooses a song, and everyone animates a character dancing to it for 5-10 seconds. My class chose a circus theme, so I decided to do a tightrope walker character.

We had to design our dances so that they could be put into sequence and would smoothly become one long animation (hence, 'collaboration'). Our class's final dance hasn't been compiled yet, but once it is I'll post it here, too.

Now, Computer Animation:

Our final project for CA1 was to design a simple, two-legged character (I made a lion! Whee!), model it, and make it walk, jump, and then do a turn. Yeah, it doesn't sound like much, but it was actually a really great exercise.

I think the most exciting thing in animation for me right now is that, even though I may not be brilliant yet, I feel like I learn so much with every single project. I can't wait to get to do more and become better both in my understanding of movement and in character acting.

The Weaving Contest Animatic

Heh... I couldn't decide whether to upload this or not, but I figure I might as well go ahead.

This was an assignment for Concept Design. We had to take a portion of the story of Arachne from Greek Mythology (Arachne and Athena have a weaving contest; Arachne's is better; Athena gets really mad and turns Arachne into a spider) and turn it into an animatic. We were given the dialogue and a description of the action, and we had a 30 second time limit to make it work.

Fitting all that mess into 30 seconds was -tough-. The dialogue itself, without pauses, was 35 seconds, so I had to chop it up in places and take out some phrases entirely to make it fit. Then the action-- well, it's a pretty dramatic scene for such a short amount of time. Very challenging.

Anyway, here's what I came up with. The ending still feels weird to me, but for the most part I'm pretty proud of it.

Spring '10-- FEWS dump

Figure drawings from last semester. This is by no means all of them, and a few of them are from figure class fall semester (and I just didn't upload them,) but here ya go!

I apologize for the image quality. They're pretty much all done on newsprint (except for one, which is in fact a painting), and newsprint just doesn't photograph well.

These are really, really, really in no particular order.

Spring '10- Beginning Painting

more classwork! These are from my elective, Beginning Painting. Some are in-class still lifes, some are homework assignments... I think the best thing about this class was that it gave me extra acrylic practice that kind of gave me a leg up in Color. I also liked that there was more stylistic freedom and creativity involved than in Color...

...but, I find that most of my paintings end up rather tight and overworked. The problem is I tend to paint really fast. So if I'm working on a painting for a few class periods, I'll usually get it to a pretty nice level on the first day, and spend the rest of the time tightening it up. Sometimes it improves it, but sometimes it loses its life...I had the same problem in Obeservational color. I definitely need to use acrylics more often so I can find the right balance between looseness and realism.

Spring '10-- Observational Color

I've been meaning since the end of last semester to upload some of my class work... but I just never got around to it until now.

Regardless, here are some of my paintings from Observational Color. They didn't photograph well so they're kind of dark, but you get the idea. I liked Color. With so much craziness and random assignments in other classes, I appreciated the predictability and relaxing nature of it. Plus it gave me lots of practice with acrylics.

Hey y'all! How's summer going? It's been pretty good for me. I'm working on a lot of fun, new projects. The problem is, I'm working on them all at the same time and they're all taking a while, so I have yet to finish any of them. But I'm getting close!

One of my projects for the summer has been a quest to make money by painting classy-type pictures that people can actually hang on their walls. My grandmother really likes orchids and I've done them in the past, so I decided to try that again. I've sold one so far (not pictured) and with any luck I'll be able to sell these, too. I'm trying to earn enough money to a) be able to eat once I go back to Ringling and b) buy a portable hard drive. I'm pretty sure I'll need one now that we're starting Computer Animation; something tells me my little beaten-up 1gig flash drive just won't cut it... ha...ha.

So... if you know anyone with money who likes flowers, point them my way. :D

but we recently started concentrating on value, so things are getting a little more interesting... So this is a lamp (homework assignment), some studies of shading on different shapes, and my lovely attempt at trompe l'oeil... meeses!

I have not updated in a while! alas!

To make up for it, I'm going to post a whole bunch of stuff today. Mostly stuff from FEWS, Figure, some from Drawing, and also some Chiustream sketches... but, for the sake of neatness, I think I'm going to give each their own post.

We'll start with the Figures... I filled up a whole sketchbook almost entirely with FEWs sketches... the good news is, I do think I'm improving!

here's some various drawings, more or less in chronological order (the last four bunches of sketches are from the same session... >_>; ), starting from about 3 weeks ago... the sketches are probably about 2 minutes each (30 seconds to 5 minutes, at most)... the other drawings range from 15 to 40 minutes.

But yeah, I arrived at Ringling a few days ago, and I've gone through orientation, and my first class is tomorrow! I'm pretty excited. It all seems very awesome. The library's awesome. The museum is awesome. The people are awesome. Yeah, I think I'm gonna like it.

And for your viewing pleasure here's the "brothers" half of the post. I drew this for CGtalk's Daily Sketch forum. The topic was "the big brother." I know it's not the most creative of interpretations, but it was fun. Bright colors.

I'm all excited about Ringling, very antsy. Man, I can't believe there's less than a week and then I'm there--! It's making it very hard to do anything productive, though, I can't sit still long enough. Although I did paint some pelicans.

...but... you know.... They're pelicans.

Tarzan, Snow White Coloring fun

Nothing I post is in any kind of order, by the way

A few days ago I was browsing the interwebs when I came across the spectacular blog of Sam Nielson. After taking my time to look through all his posts, I naturally felt inspired to draw. In one of his more recent posts (see link) he mentions how he took a master's art work, and a disney princess coloring sheet, and combined the two into one shockingly epic painting. So I decided to try it, too.

I did Snow White. But being the lazy soul I am, I didn't reference my color palette like he did. Looks ok, I guess, but I don't think I captured her "ness" so well.

Then someone mentioned to me the idea of painting Tarzan. I thought, brilliant! That sounds like so much fun! So I did, though once again too lazy to reference the colors. But I quite like how he turned out.

In any case, it was a fun exercise.
